The Chamber affirmed that the formation of the committee reflects the economic, commercial, and heritage significance of old markets in the Kingdom of Bahrain, including the old Manama Souq, Muharraq Souq, Sitra Souq, Hamad Town Souq, Riffa Souq, Jidhafs Souq, Isa Town Souq, and other popular and traditional markets. These markets form an integral part of the history of Bahrain’s commercial activity, contribute to supporting economic activity and tourism, and help preserve the national commercial heritage.
The Chamber explained that the committee will serve as a specialized platform for addressing the needs of old markets and presenting views and proposals aimed at developing them and enhancing their competitiveness. This will contribute to preserving this longstanding commercial heritage, supporting the sustainability of activities within these markets, and revitalizing the economic and tourism activity associated with them.
The Chamber noted that the committee aims to ensure effective representation of the various activities associated with old markets, enhancing their ability to discuss the issues and challenges facing the sector and propose initiatives and solutions to support its development. It will also encourage broader participation among business owners and workers in the sector.
The Chamber added that, upon completion of the requirements for establishing the committee, the total number of permanent sectoral committees for the 31st term will rise to 12, strengthening the scope of sectoral representation and allowing greater focus on specialized issues and topics within each economic sector.
The Bahrain Chamber called on business owners, merchants, and workers in old markets to register and run for membership through the Chamber’s website and actively participate in supporting this initiative by contributing to sector representation and putting forward initiatives and ideas that help develop the sector, enhance its economic role, and preserve its historical and heritage significance. The Chamber emphasized that the success of sectoral committees depends primarily on the participation of experienced professionals and practitioners from various economic sectors.
